Coming up as part of a major push for Windows 10, Cortana may reach out to Android and iOS platforms – leaving the safety of Windows phones.
Following a report on Reuters, Microsoft may be looking to advance the platform of Cortana with a new “Einstein” update and will launch the service directly to its competition in the mobile space. As Cortana has been available on the “Windows Phone” platform, the application may make its way to iOS and Android when “Windows Phone” becomes extinct in favor of a universal Windows 10 software. While Microsoft certainly isn’t abandoning Windows on mobile platforms, their new CEO Satya Nadella has been pushing for a more open market and looks to continue this trend with a flexible and true Windows that is ready for all devices.
Pushing Cortana to the competition’s platform with improved AI is both good for Cortana and Siri with the purported “Einstein” update as it should improve both functionality and update frequency for the services. Eric Horvitz, managing director of Microsoft Research, detailed in part what we can expect from Cortana in the future.
“This kind of technology, which can read and understand email, will play a central role in the next roll out of Cortana, which we are working on now for the fall time frame.”
“We’re defining the competitive landscape…of who can provide the most supportive services that make life easier, keep track of things, that complement human memory in a way that helps us get things done.”
I for one welcome our artificial intelligence overlords and look forward to the release of Cortana on Android and iOS, as well as with the launch of Windows 10 [for free] on PC and mobile platforms.
