Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) released a statement today announcing that the Columbus Nova investment firm has completed the acquisition of SOE and will transition into an independent game development stupid under the new name Daybreak Game Company LLC.

This acquisition will bring big changes and reshape the future for SOE, but it leaves us with a few questions. The first being, who is Columbus Nova? According to the Columbus Nova website, they are “a multi-strategy investment firm which manages over $15 billion of assets through its own funds and affiliated portfolio companies.” They were founded in 2000 and their team consists of Andrew Intrater, Jason Epstein, and Paul Liparo. Mr. Epstein was quoted on the acquisition in the SOE press release.

Sony Online Entertainment, newly rebranded as Daybreak, is a great addition to our existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. We see tremendous opportunities for growth with the expansion of the company’s game portfolio through multi-platform offerings as well as an exciting portfolio of new quality games coming up, including the recently launched H1Z1 and the highly anticipated EverQuest Next to be released in the near future. The recent Early Access launch success of H1Z1 is just one testament to the talent and dedication of the studio’s developers to create great online gaming experiences.

Mr. Epstein’s statement also helps to shed some more light on their plans the newly branded Daybreak studio. They are planning to expand the company’s current game portfolio (EverQuest, H1Z1, Landmark, etc.) to “multi-platform” offerings as well as bring new quality games in the future. What this means is that we will likely see some if not all of SOE’s (now Daybreak) current game library come out on more platforms that weren’t previously planned such as the Xbox One. In fact, president of Daybreak Game Company John Smedley has confirmed via twitter that their new zombie survival MMO H1Z1 will also be making its way to the Xbox One.

This is all exciting news, but it seems that some services will be affected during the transition. One of them being the SOE Live service.

There’s another bright side to this acquisition as well. Since SOE will be joining Columbus Nova as Daybreak, they will also now have access to all their tech resources that come with the large firm. You can expect them to make good use of those resources with the continuing development of EverQuest Next and future titles.

We’ll be sure to keep you informed on any new updates that might pop up, but for now you can read the full press release down below.
